La Maja Vestida

Her eyes and silence questioned him, her smile
was bold and hidden as by a wind-snapped veil.
He saw it flashing, dabbed his brush, looked up
and it was gone - the sunshine on her lip
perhaps had played a trick. Each day, she came
and posed to capture light and shape for him.
They rarely spoke; beneath bland words, the meat
of all desire trembled. She left each night.
